Tutoring

Tutoring: multiple approaches; which one’s right?

You’re a parent who sees your child not quite getting his/her needs met at school. You’re pretty convinced that tutoring is the next step that’s needed to get those needs met, but where do you start? There are multiple approaches to tutoring, so which one’s right?

Multiple Approaches: Tutoring Services

  • Concept Mastery: Working through unmastered concepts, this is the most common type of tutoring service. This is for students who are struggling or not quite on grade level.
  • Enrichment Tutoring: This is for students who may find themselves bored or unchallenged or for students looking for a leg up. This can be specific to a given topic within a subject or it could look like a book study.
  • Homework Help: For students who struggle with homework concepts, this is your service. It’s specifically designed as a 1:1 help on weekly homework assignments.
  • Test Prep: Usually reserved for college test prep, like the SAT or ACT, this service can also help prepare students for state tests as well.

Multiple Approaches: Types of Tutoring

  • Online 1:1– These personalized sessions meet on an online meeting platform.
  • Online Learning Pod– A Learning Pod is a group of students, usually 3-10, who are all working towards a similar goal. This can adobe a book study. Online Learning Pods meet via an online meeting platform.
  • In-Person 1:1– These personalized sessions meet in-home, in a library, at an office, or in a coffee shop.
  • In-Person Learning Pod– As with the online Learning Pod, this is a group study session or book club. It would meet in-home, in a library, at an office, or in a coffee shop.
