Finding an Enrichment Tutor

How does tutoring help a non-struggling student? Enter the Enrichment Tutor.

What’s that?

An enrichment tutor is a qualified tutor who focuses on extending concepts that have already been mastered.

Most often, tutors are thought to be supplemental teachers. But tutors can also help with homework or work on subject/concept enrichment.

How do I find one?

I offer all three services at Integrated Stage Tutoring. Read more about that here.

But if you didn’t want to work with me, here are the ways I’d look for one.

Most tutoring centers (Sylvan, Kumon, Mathnasium, Huntington, etc.) will offer all three services as well.

Still not your jam?

When you interview your potential tutor via phone call (assuming they offer a free discovery call), ask them what they do in their practice to support a student who’s already mastered the concepts.

Favorite Ways to Support Someone Who’s Mastered

Here are a few of my favorite ways to support a student who’s mastered the material.

Flip the Script. Provide a problem, question, or something related to the resource that you’re using for your session. Instead of you leading the conversation as the teacher/tutor, allow the student to become the teacher and teach you!

Books, books, books! Apply the concepts (in ELAR, for example) that the student learned in class to a novel rather than a passage.

Game Design. Design a board game that illustrates knowledge of the concepts. Don’t forget to play it to make sure he/She understood the assignment.
