Science STEAM

Destination: STEAM Camp

We had our inaugural Destination: STEAM Camp last week and it. was. amazing! We had SO much fun!

What is STEAM Camp?

STEAM is Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. For me, the A will always translate to “arts” vs. “art” because I want to integrate as much art as possible! STEAM is one of my favorite ways to do that. Read more about STEAM here.

For us this year, we had a theme every day. I’ve already decided to change that for next year so that each week is its own theme. Our themes this year took us to a new destination: space, the beach, an amusement park, and camping.

We studied space, the ocean and density, force and motion and the theme park, and nature with camping.

Activities for Days!

We did SO many cool things!

The kids really enjoyed our science demonstration of an oil spill where they had to clean a feather covered in cooking oil. They also built rollercoasters, made bouncy balls, constructed a blanket tent, made spaceships for marshmallow aliens, and made gobos for flashlights.

In the art department, they loved to put on skits, then they also painted with produce, made galaxy Play-Doh, and sculpted astronauts out of aluminum foil. It was a blast.

Lessons/Suggestions for Next Year

My campers wanted the camp to be longer than a half-day camp and they wanted it to be all summer long. Next year, I’m going to offer multiple week-long STEAM camps that are themed so we can really dive into the topic and take away a bit more learning.

The parents all seemed to love it and the conversations it sparked at home, so I’ll take that as a win, too!

What topics would you love to see for a STEAM camp? Animals, performing arts, and fashion were all mentioned. We’ll see what next year brings!
